Mermaids
Mermaids are legendary creatures with the upper body of a human and the lower half of a fish. The first stories of mermaids was in ancient Assyria, there was a goddess named Atargatis who transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human lover. Mermaids are associated with storms, floods, and drownings. In other folk traditions falling in love with humans was something mermaids did to people on ships. In 1493, sailing off the coast of Hispaniola there were reports of seeing three "female forms" but they were not as beautiful as they were said to be. Mermaids are still being looked for today but there has not been any sightings. There are professional divers have performed as mermaids at Florida's Weeki Wachee Springs since 1947 so people still think of them as something to be real.
